Meet "The Derbyshires"
The oldest member of The Derbyshires is Don, a retired farmer still coming to terms with the loss of his wife two years ago. He is visited regularly by our Agricultural Chaplain, Alan Griggs. Don's bungalow is off the gas grid and he relies on kerosene to heat his home. The cost was taking up an increasing proportion of his retirement income. Don joined the RAD Community Oil Buying Scheme and he saved £200 last year. Now he tells everyone about the scheme.
His son, Derek, who took over the farm, is also being supported by Alan, the Agricultural Chaplain. Don's other son Dave and his wife Dee have taken part in a Neighbourhood Development Plan process, facilitated by Joe Dugdale, RAD's Neighbourhood Planning officer. Through his work, Dave has also received Suicide Awareness Training, delivered by RAD. Dee is the chair of her local village hall committee and has used RAD's Community Buildings Advice Service.
Don's granddaughter Daisy has been made mobile by Wheels to Work and his grandson Dylan benefited from attending a FAAD personal finance workshop.
The work RAD has undertaken with The Derbyshires has helped to save them money, improve their health, develop their skills and knowledge, overcome problems, build social networks, strengthen local control and increase independence.
