Take Action - Write to your MP

There was meaningful action on hunger in the Chancellor's budget. Phillip Hammond listened to the concerns raised by End Hunger UK and partner organisations. The current six-week wait before applicants receive any benefits under Universal Credit will be reduced by one week. However, problems with administration, delivery and unjust sanctions still lead to destitution. End Hunger continues to campaign for a benefits system which doesn't cause destitution.

What gets measured gets mended

Beyond the budget, there is still a week to go until End Hunger and partner organisations take their message to Parliament in support of Emma Lewell-Buck MP's bill calling for the government to start measuring food poverty.

If you want to find out more on the extent of hunger beyond simply foodbanks, you can read recent research by UCL into foodbank use on this blog.

Collections in supermarkets

Fareshare is an End Hunger partner organisation that distributes food to over 7,000 charities and community groups nationwide, working with supermarkets. Over the coming weeks they will be collecting for emergency food providers in Tesco - this raises awareness and helps stock foodbanks over the Christmas period. You can find out more and get involved here.

The work of volunteers

While End Hunger ultimately wants to see government take responsibility for ending hunger in the UK, they know they are currently a long way from solving hunger and they are seeing voluntary organisations take up the slack. Recent research from the University of Britstol looks at what has motivated people to get involved. Stephanie Denning writes about their findings here.
